square one coffee, lancaster, pa

I am a last minute booking once again, which sucks because there is no advertising. I try to get people to come out, but everyone is on break and even my "regulars," who have never missed a FBF show, are out of town. It's the first time I don't feel like going out--voice is tired, body is tired, just want to rest.

I show up about 7:45 PM and the place has a few people hanging out reading. There seems to be a playing area and a reading area. I set up in the playing area and wait for people to show up. The hour between eight and nine sucks. Hardly anyone is around. I play for four high school seniors, who seem to dig my stuff, but leave after twenty minutes or so. A few others trickle in, but it's awkward.

Around nine, a flock of high school kids come in and I hear the name "Caravella" being tossed around. Great--that means they go to my school. I don't know any of them, but they turn out to be very cool, settling into the playing area to become my audience for about an hour. They seem to especially dig "Hot Lunch" and "Snow Globe." :)

Around 9:40, I break a string and have no replacement (idiot). So, I make everyone promise they won't leave and run home to get some strings. I come back and play until 10:30 for one last holdout (a new FBF fan!) who thanks me when I finish my set and leaves.

It was cool--I thought tonight was going to totally suck and it turned out pretty great. I didn't play for one person that I knew.
